Church leadership Snapshot

Arlin and Lana Sanford

Arlin and Lana met in 1960 in Oakdale, CA., at the First Baptist Chuirch where Arlin's father was pastor. After leaving retail manegment in 1978, they followed God's call and entered into ministry in Manteca Calif.  There the Sanford's served in many churches large and small and saw God's work performed in many ways.
Then in 2009, they moved to Columbus, Mont., having retired from the pastorate. Both of them never thought they would be called back into that role.
"We were here to semi-retire, we never anticipated God calling us into the pastoral ministry here in Columbus," Arlin said, but added, "We are thrilled to live in Montana and be involved in Kingdom business."
And Lana would agree.
"We are so happy and honored to be a part of this church.  There is no place I'd rather be as I can dearly see our Heavenly Father has ordered our steps," she said. "I love it when God changes our plans."
And, as many of you know, pastor's wives often serve in many capacities in the church with the different needs that come up. Currently, Lana teaches sunday school but is also there to support her fellow workers in Christ.
"I love working with and encouraging our women's leader, Maureen.  We have seen many life changing miracles with our women, especially in our continued bible studies."
And, she says, she too feels much love and support there.
"All this has grown and strenghthend us together."
And, Although Lana enjoys being behind the scenes cheering on and praying for the fellowship of believers, she especialy enjoys teaching her pre-school and kindergarten Sunday school class.
"They have been such a joy to see their little faces lift and attentive eyes as a bible story comes to life for them."

They truely have a heart for the little ones and it shows in the fun at Good News Club each week with the wacky games, yummy snacks and engaging Bible lessons.

Currently Maureen is the church treasurer and leader for the women's bible study.
Over the years Maureen and her husband Mike have seen many changes at CBC but through it all God has been faithful, she said.

What We Believe
& Statment of Purpose
Doctrine of the Scriptures:  We believe the Scriptures (Bible) to be our sole authority because they are fully "inspired by God" (II Tim. 3:16,17) and fully "inerrant" (II Tim. 2:15) and is the source of life and the directive for activity (Heb. 4:12) for the believer.  (Psalm 119:9,11,18,25,49-50,89,105,165,176)

The Doctrine of God:  In the nature of ONE GOD (Trinity, Triune Godhead) there are THREE PERSONS: God the Father (Jn. 6:27, Gal. 1:3), God the Son (Jn. 1:1, Heb. 1:8), and God the Holy Spirit (Acts 5:3-4, 9).  These were from the beginning (Gen. 1:1) and will be to the end (Isa. 43:10,11).

We believe the attributes of God to be:  Immutable (Jms. 1:17), Omnipresent (ps. 139:7-12), Sovereign (Eph. 1:8), Omniscient (Matt. 11:21), Omnipotent (Rev. 9:6), and perfect in Justice (Acts 17:31) - In Love (Eph. 2:4,5) - in Truth (Jn. 14:6) - and Holiness (1 Jn. 1:5).

The Doctrine of Christ:

We believe that Christ (the Second Person of the Trinity, the Son of God) to be born of a woman (Gal. 4:4), subject to growth (Lk. 2:52), seen and handled by man (1 Jn. 1:1, Matt. 26:12), and subject to the limitations of humanity (Matt. 4:2, Jn. 19:28, 4:6, 11:35, Heb 4:15), demonstrates He is all God and all man.  He came to earth to reveal God to men (Jn. 1:18), to provide an example for living (1 Peter 2:21), to provide sacrifice for sin (Heb. 10:1-10), to destroy the works of the devil (1 Jn. 3:8), to be a merciful High Priest (Heb. 5:1-2), and to be highly exalted (Phil. 2:9).  He lived a perfect life and became our "propitiation" (1 Jn. 2:2) and became our "substitute" dying in place of us - the sinners (Ii Cor. 5:21); He arose from the grave (Jn. 20: 11-17) and will return soon for His Church (II Thes. 2:1-12).

The Doctrine of the Church:

We believe that the Church is a spiritual organism of which Christ is the Head, consisting of all regenerated people from Pentecost to the rapture.  This is a group of professing believers who are organized to demonstrate and proclaim God's Word and will.  We believe and practice it's ordinances (not sacraments) which are outward rites prescribed by Christ to be performed by His church.
1. The Lord's Supper: (1 Cor. 11:23-26) This is a memorial service to "remember" Christ's sacrificial offering to save His chosen ones (Eph. 1:3 - 2:10).  The bread represents Christ's broken body, and the cup represents the shed blood of our Lord.
2. Baptist: By the means of immersion (rom. 6:1-14) we believe water baptist is an outward expression of what the Holy Spirit has worked on the inside (Mk. 1:8) - therefore we do not participate in infant baptism.  Membership is reserved for those who are truly believers and who have been baptist by immersion.

The Doctrine of Future Events:

We believe and are looking forward (II Tim. 4:8) to the imminent return of Christ for the Church (I Thes. 4:13 - 5:11).  We are pre-millennial in our belief and practices.  All will be judged by our Lord; believers at the Bema Judgement (I Cor. 3:20 - 15) - and non-believers at the Great White Throne Judgement (Rev. 20:11-15).  We believe heaven to be an eternal place where we reign with Christ and hell to be eternal punishment for the un-saved.

Holy Priesthood:

Realizing that Christ is The Corner Stone (I Peter 2:1010) of the "spiritual house" that is being built up, I commit to living as a "living stone" chosen "for a holy priesthood, to offer up spiritual sacrifices."  I am chosen and called to be "holy", to serve our God, to minister to others, and give of my time and treasure to the Lord God Almighty.

Body of Christ:

I submit to the fact - knowing Christ is the Head (I Corinthians 12:12-26) of the Body - I have been "baptized into one body" by " one Spirit" to take my part in furthering the Kingdom of God.  I commit to allow God to guide me in service to Him through my church, gladly accepting the role He has for me, not jealous of another's role, but content in my responsibility.  I will strive to stave off any potential divisions in the Body and will be a part of honoring one another.

Family of God:

I understand that as one "being lead by the Spirit of God...are Children of God (Romans 8:1, 12-17), this includes being an "heir of God and fellow heirs of Christ."  Since I have been "adopted" as a child into God's family, I commit to the importance of the Brethren starting with my own family.  I submit to love and care for each one that God has surrounded me with.

Soldier of Christ:

Since I have been "enlisted" as a "soldier" into God's Army (II Tim. 2:3,4), I commit to stay focused on the task at hand, and not allow the "affairs of everyday life" to distract me from my service to "please" our Lord in every way.  And, given the time He leaves me here, I purpose to use that time to proclaim Christ to people who need the Gospel message (Matt. 28:18-20).

Statement of Purpose
The purpose of Columbus Baptist Church is to be a people who "worship the Lord in spirit and Truth" (Jn. 4:24), live to be "vessels of honor, sanctified and useful (II Tim. 2:20-23) in God's kingdom, "be (God's) witnesses" both at home and around the world (Acts 1:8), and look diligently for the eminent return of Christ for His Bride" (II Tim. 64:8).

Statement of Personal Commitment:

Sheep:  As one who has heard the call of The Good Shepher (John 10:1-30), I commit to hear His voice only and not be taken in by false teachers.  I will follow His voice through submissions to His will in obedience as a sheep in the flock of God.  I will ever rejoice that in the "eternal life" He gives, that no one can remove me from His tender care.
